CHAPTER 9

Riley woke up slowly, savoring the feeling of Dee’s warmth beside her. There was something profoundly satisfying about mornings like this when the sunlight filtered through the curtains in soft ribbons and everything felt perfectly in place. She turned over, her lips pressing against Dee’s shoulder. A small sigh escaped her, and she found herself smiling.

Dee, still half-asleep, mumbled something incoherent but deliciously soft. Riley chuckled. “Good morning, rockstar.”

“Hmm,” Dee groaned, burying her face deeper into the pillow. “Five more minutes.”

Riley propped herself up on one elbow, brushing some messy strands of Dee’s hair out of her face. "Five more minutes, and then you’re going to have to go pack."

Dee blinked, her eyes groggy but starting to focus. "Ugh. Don’t remind me."

Riley knew that look well. Dee hated packing. For a person who thrived in chaos—messy studios, guitars and amps strewn across every available surface—packing was her archnemesis. It required order, a plan. Things Dee was absolutely allergic to.

Riley grinned. "Well, let me remind you that I’m helping, so it won’t be total torture."

Dee opened one eye, giving Riley a smirk that was way too flirty for someone who’d just woken up. "Is that a promise?"

Riley rolled her eyes but couldn't help the smile tugging at her lips. Dee could charm the stars out of the sky, and Riley—being only human—was not immune. Not in the slightest.

They eventually dragged themselves out of bed, their morning slow but full of easy touches. There was something intimate about the mundanity of it—passing each other in the hallway, brushing hands while picking up clothes from the floor—the soft buzz of their morning routine wrapping them in comfort.

Dee leaned against the wall, folding up a worn band tee, the kind she couldn’t go on tour without. "You know I’m gonna miss you, right?"

Riley leaned back, her arms crossed, watching her with an expression halfway between playful and sentimental. "Yeah, yeah. I’m sure you’ll be just fine. You, the band, the road, all that glory. I’ll just be sitting here, waiting for my big art debut, wondering if you’ll even remember me."

Dee threw the shirt at her. "As if I could forget you. You’re, like, my favorite part of life."

The words hit her heart in just the right way, making it skip a beat. Dee always knew how to sneak up on her like that—saying something casually, as though it didn’t send Riley into a small emotional whirlwind. She cleared her throat and gave a mock-exasperated sigh, tossing the shirt back. "Stop being cute and get packing."

Packing took longer than it should have, mostly because Dee kept distracting her, either with jokes or kisses or some new reason to procrastinate. But eventually, it was done. They grabbed their things, headed out, and Riley dropped Dee off at the rehearsal space where the tour bus was waiting.

As Riley watched Dee walk away, that knot of unease tightened in her stomach, the reality of the long separation setting in. They’d been apart before—hell, Dee had toured plenty—but this time felt different.
